About the People Smile At Phones meme template
You've seen this one everywhere: a woman on the train, phone in hand, visibly moved to tears while a narrator gushes about how heartwarming it is to catch a stranger smiling at good news. Then panel four flips the whole thing — a blacked-out phone screen just begging you to fill in what she's actually looking at.
Originally an Adam Ellis webcomic (the reveal was Sonic and Knuckles kissing), it's become one of the internet's favorite bait-and-switch formats. The setup is wholesome, the payoff is anything but — perfect for jokes about horoscopes, group chats, exes, fan fiction, or whatever unhinged thing actually makes someone cry-laugh on public transit. Caption it free and let the blank screen do the heavy lifting.
